The Missing Children Incident is the name given to a series of disappearances of five children at Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria in Hurricane, Utah in the year of 1984. It was caused by William Afton. The individual cases originally believed to be unrelated, the discovery of blood of each of the five victims within the Safe Room proved that they were likely a chain of murders. Vincent Afton was arrested for the murders after his brother planted evidence to direct any potential attention away from himself, but he was released due to there not being enough evidence to convict him. Though the case continues to be investigated by FBI agents Mulder and Scully, there has been little to no clues to help point towards a lead.
The murders were committed by William for a number of reasons -- mostly because of his fascination with recreating the paranormal activity and possession of animatronics after he murdered Charlie Emily, and as a way of furthering his research on Remnant, which was created after burning parts of a possessed material. Each child's corpse was shoved inside of an animatronic, which they subsequently possessed. William has since been harvesting parts from the possessed animatronics little by little and creating Remnant from them.
In late 1984, Freddy's employee Philip Guy was performing maintenance on Fredbear when he discovered the rotting corpse of Cassidy Boseman inside. Conveniently, William was also there at the time, and convinced Phil not to tell anyone "for the sake of the families". Phil was forced to clean all five bodies out of the animatronics and had them disposed, but the animatronics remained possessed.
